Machine Learning Zone Report

Read the report: Machine Learning Zone Report – November 2019 [PDF] The Machine Learning Zone was supported by the University of Oxford. In this activity, students connected with University of Oxford researchers working on things like how to make sure robots don’t crash into each other when they can’t talk to each other, why human brains are so good at learning, the ethical issues of robots working in hospitals and health care, and making computers that can learn to spot patterns in genetic data. This zone saw an increase in students logged in and questions asked than the previous I’m a Researcher activity, Curiosity Carnival, in 2017. Students had lots of questions about careers and education in particular, including questions about studying and working at the University of Oxford. Students from schools across England connected with nine researchers at the University of Oxford: Yee Whye Teh, who won this zone, … Continue reading

Who’s taking part in the Machine Learning Zone?

I’m a Researcher, Get me out of here! is back this November. Curiosity Zone Report

The Curiosity Zone was the first zone of I’m a Researcher, Get me out of here. It was funded by the European Commission under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions, which is an EU funding programme to support research careers. The Zone ran for three weeks, connecting secondary school students in Oxfordshire with 22 researchers from the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University. The aim was to engage students with the wide variety of local researchers and to encourage students to attend to the live final at the Curiosity Carnival on 29th September. In total, researchers from different disciplines answered 133 approved questions sent in by students in ASK and, there were 14 live chats with classes. The majority of the students who took part were in Science classes. There were also Geography and Psychology classes who contributed 30% of the total questions in ASK. The majority of the activity took … Continue reading

Thank you from Priyanka, winner of Curiosity Zone!

Hi everyone! Having participated in I’m an Engineer a couple of years ago, I had a fantastic experience chatting to students about engineering.  So when I was approached to participate in I’m a Researcher, Get Me Out of Here! for Curiosity Carnival, I didn’t hesitate at all to reply “Yes!”. The live chats really are a great platform for students across various subjects and personality types to fearlessly ask questions that they may hesitate to ask in person. Combined with the enthusiastic and efficient moderators, the live chats were a frenzy of interesting questions (thank you, students!) What I did not expect was how much I’d learn from the other researchers, whose expertise was way out of my area of knowledge! From neuroscience, to philosophy, to anthropology and psychology, I was blown away by the level of expertise, enthusiasm and concise communication that the other researchers brought to the event. … Continue reading

Curiosity Zone: Who’s taking part?

This September, students at Oxfordshire schools will be interacting with 22 researchers from the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University in the Curiosity Carnival Zone of I’m a Researcher. Between 11th– 29th September school students will put the researchers through their paces in fast-paced live chats and probing questions on everything from the Ottoman Empire, to how babies learn language, to how they became academic researchers in the first place. Each student will then vote for their favourite researcher and determine the five going through to the LIVE FINAL taking place at Oxford Curiosity Carnival on European Researchers Night, Friday 29th September. Read more about the I’m a Researcher Live Final. Oxfordshire schools taking part: Fitzharry’s School – Science classes Henry Box School – English and Engineering classes Oxford Academy – History, Geography, Psychology and  D & T classes Rye St Antony School – Biology and Tutor group classes St Gregory … Continue reading
